Description: 12 -year-old foundling. Tall and slight in frame with wild, wavy, flaming red hair.
Distinguishing features: Arms and legs covered in silvery blue scales. Yellow-hazel eyes.
Personality: Tough, brave, and loyal, Emba has led a sheltered life, but part of her has always dreamed of more. Her eccentric found family are the most important thing in the world to her, and it’s saving them that forces her to abandon her old life and embrace a new identity and new powers…
Odolf Bravebuckle - Emba’s hapless sidekick
14-year-old orphan. Runaway blacksmith’s apprentice. Desperate to be a hero.
Description: Medium height, with a gangly build and short, dark, curly hair. Often wears a dragon belt buckle, an oversized helmet and carries a spear.
Distinguishing features: Just one eyebrow.
Personality: A bit of a joker but with a lot of heart. He lacks confidence but finds his bravery when it counts.
An elderly hermit who found Emba in the wood as a baby and has brought her up in seclusion. She is the keeper of the Tome Of Terrible Tomorrows, a book that prophesies the future in rather confusing verse.
Description: She is short with wiry, grey hair and walks hunched over.
Distinguishing features: Has long, yellow, curling toenails, which she insists have magic properties when added to spells (much to her customers’ disgust!)
Personality: She is wise and caring.
